At first it's kind of startling, jolting me awake at 2:30 in the morning. Then I realize what the screaming is..... coyotes.
I've heard them several times before. There is a big wooded area across from my condo, and I'm guessing that's where they are. Sometimes it's just one or two. Last night, there were several.
Once I'm awake, I like listening to them. One starts the howl, then others join in. Last night it even sounded like there was a baby. The howling gets louder and louder, then abruptly stops.
I'd like to think they are just calling to each other, gathering everyone together before they head back to their den. Then the thought crosses my mind that they might be sending out the dinner call because they've found something. I get a little sad and am glad my cats are inside at night.
I go back to my more pleasant thought that they are all just rounding one another up.
Hopefully the coyotes won't lose their habitat with so much building going on.
They are pretty cool to hear.
