Democracy

Today was election day.

Student Council election day at my school. There were twenty-three 4th -6th graders running for five different positions. Twenty-three speeches to listen to. And ya know what? They did pretty good. Very good, as a matter of fact. Each candidate calmly walked up to the microphone, slowly and clearly (mostly!) gave their speech, and returned to their seat amidst a bit of applause.

The audience was perfect. Extremely quiet and polite. No whooping and hollaring. Patiently waiting while the speech giver found the right words to say. Enthusiastically clapped at the end.

Now, I have to tally the votes. I brought them home with me to do tonight - imagine the level of trust that exists to allow me to take home the votes in such a big time election! Tomorrow the results will be announced. I can't help but feel bad for those who don't win...... I kind of don't want to look at the ballots.

Whatever the results, I'm proud of them.

Suzi,
It is good that the schools have instituted a program to teach the "kids" about the election process.
Back in "the day" all we had was a civics book.
Education comes from doing not just passive reading.
(just my opinion)
Keep posting!
